What better way to kick off 3 weeks of holidays than a trip to the local market for breakfast? Our friends/ landlords Li Shah and Stanley had captured our imagination before when they told us tales of the famous red and white table battles for the best coffee. People travel across the country just for this coffee and curry laksa among other famous dishes. They raved about the fresh ingredients and generations old tradition of this market. We just had to try it.
Yesterday morning Li Shah, her brother Tony and sister-in-law Yvonne offered to help us navigate this food journey. They weren’t kidding about the food being fresh. You could see the chicken you were about to eat being butchered and plucked before your eyes.
Handmade sweets were specially crafted out of glutinous rice, sugar and coconut and molded into intricate shapes. Then these vibrantly colourful treats were wrapped in pandan leaves like putting the finishing touches on a Christmas gift.
Great food and great company was a lovely way to start the holidays. Bring on day two as we head to the beaches of Langkawi!
