The guest house we stayed in when we first arrived in Colombo was owned by a couple named Nagani and Austin. Austin was the former ambassador to Pakistan and was a very well respected diplomat in various countries over his years in the foreign service.

Austin gave Trina and I Sinhala lessons every night we stayed there – always over a nice glass of arrack (whiskey made from a coconut) and Crown Royal (which we imported from Canada).

Here’s a look at Trina learning the difference between saying 7 and 60 in Sinhala. I still can’t tell the difference. Sorry about the poor lighting. We’ll improve our production values in future broadcasts.
